Manifesto

This is an exciting time for the Ruby on Rails community. With Rails 7 (and 8), Hotwire, Stimulus, Strada, and all the new Turbo goodies, there are a lot of amazing advancements to help developers build quicker and better. Especially with DHH’s proclamation that Rails is “The One Person Framework”, there is no better time in history to build on the web.

But with all of this rapid innovation comes new content daily from developers and creators showcasing how to utilize and build with these new tools. It’s becoming easier and easier to lose track of (or miss entirely) each new article, toolkit, or sample project.

My primary hope with rails.market is that others in the community find it helpful. Somewhere that makes discovery easier and becomes a reliable resource to keep track of all the helpful and insightful resources for their development journey without losing them in the void.

Likewise, I want to provide a dedicated place for those who are creating these wonderfully valuable tools and resources for others to showcase their goodies and get them in front of more people so they can continue to provide them for the community.

But I realize this won’t happen overnight. Building the tool, the content, and the brand will take time. And I’m okay with that. We have to start somewhere. That’s why the first version of this site wasn’t even itself a Rails app. It was a static flat file HTML/CSS/JS that I was able to get up and running within 24 hours thanks in large part to Jason Leow’s Lists Kit. From there, we will continue to iterate and evolve.

And it’s in this spirit that I want to keep at the heart of rails.market. While the site itself is pretty limited and basic at the moment, in addition to consistently adding new content, I’m hoping to be regularly improving and building out the actual Rails app with more functionality and improved design and usability and make the entire source code and commit history available to those that are interested.

The plan is to also include “remixed” or various themed versions to showcase how one might accomplish the same idea utilizing different frameworks or starter kits. It’s something I wish we had available to us more, so I figured why not do my part, one commit at a time.

Hopefully, if you ever need a starting point for your own marketplace built in Rails, this will be a helpful resource for you. Or maybe you just want to see code examples to swipe and utilize in your own projects or help you learn. The more we all share, the better for everyone.
